Oh, I didn't mean it to tarnish the award! I just was surprised to hear that his first call was unfortunately lost in the wake of a bunch of bad calls. It just shows that even a first-time GOMP is just one call away from turning it around. What one man can do, another can do!

I would have had 3/19/95 on the list for the time the boys debuted "Unbroken Chain" and when I saw Vince Welnick from The Tubes turn into a pack of butterflies right on stage.

I just like that Tom gets so giddy whenever Eddie calls. I don't think Eddie is that funny, but it's fun to hear the two of them get the giggles, in the same way that happens with Mr. Tompkins.

Even that first call might have worked out if Tom hadn't already had so many lousy ones that night. Eddie's problem was that he hesitated at the start, and Tom was primed for garbage. Nevertheless, his potential, I think, was evident: he didn't try to put on a show; he answered Tom's questions straightforwardly; he showed a capacity to provide nice detail.
I love Eddie. He just seems like a regular guy. He doesn't come off as consciously trying to be funny, even as he seeks to entertain. He isn't full of appreciation of his own performance. And, best of all, for some reason he makes Tom laugh every time, and it's always a relief when Tom gets a kick out of an ordinary caller. We make him so impatient so much of the time.

I agree. To paraphrase June Carter Cash, Eddie is strong because he knew the hammer and white heat. If anything, this makes him even more of an inspiration. |
