Settlers of Catan

Anybody else play this?

My friends and I read about this in Wired and got a copy. My one friend took it home with her so I've only played it a couple of times but I'm kind of hooked now.

I played this a few weeks back for the first time.  Great, nerdy fun!

My favorite resource is sheep.  My second favorite is corn.

Why did they think the best place to play this was out on the lawn?

I played a LOT of this for about a year or so and am kind of burnt out on it, but have a lot of affection.  I think the end-game kind of slumps a bit, but it's still a pretty great game.

I've been real into Carcassonne lately.

I agree with you about the end-game. You'll be taking turns and all of a sudden with no warning someone wins.

oh, thank god I wasn't the first one to post about nerdy board games. Catan is pretty great-- my cousin and her boyfriend introduced my fiancee and I to it about a year and a half ago, and it's all been downhill from there as far as nerd games are concerned. I got a copy of Cosmic Encounter for Christmas last year, and I highly recommend it, especially if you're into science fictiony stuff. Agricola is a pretty fun game that revolves around farming, of all things.

Ideally, yes.

Actually, no. For example: http://www.jsettlers.org/

I've only played this particular game online but I am interested in this type of game and own a few that I play periodically with the family.  I'm far from an authority but am happy to answer any question that may arise.

For those interested, this is the best, if potentially overwhelming, site for information:

i love this thread already.

a group of friends and i get together every so often to play video games, board games, drink, and make dinner.  it's usually the most fun i have on the weekends i need to keep it cheap considering none of them go to shows but i enjoy their company.

Why do they have what looks to be a tapir in their backyard.

Catan is a fantastic game. It's just the right balance between simple/fun/accessible to all, etc and the "other side" of gaming - that more complex stuff that instantly classifies you as a nerd.

Your name is pretty ironic, because playing Catan is itself a pretty slippery slope. It starts off innocently enough, and then the next thing you know you're playing Advanced Squad Leader or Arkham Horror.
