Title: Durham Show
Post by: lpme on January 17, 2016, 02:13:23 AM
Hey friends,

My wife and I are heading to Durham for the show at the end of February.

We are coming in from Colorado, we have never been to North Carolina before.  What do you suggest we see while in town?  We are getting in thursday afternoon and flying back home sunday evening.

I have done some googling and so far we are interested in the Duke lemur tour, the 21C museum and having dinner at Dames Chicken and Waffles and Harvest 18.  My wife is vegetarian and it looks like both places have some options for her.  We rented a private residence on Air B&B near the Forrest Hills area, so we will probably be eating breakfast and lunch in to save some cash, but if anyone can recommend a good cup of coffee in the area I would appreciate it.

I am a big Superchunk and Merge Records fan. Is there anything interesting to see in respect to the history of the label?  It doesn't look like their office has any sort of public viewing area or store.

Last, is there any sort of after party planned? I would love to meet as many FOT's as possible and have a few drinks.

I'll think about this and get more to you by the show.

Dame's is great, but I've only eaten there 5 of the 15 times I've tried to go. Their seating process sucks and it's a very small restaurant. Saturday evening will be very difficult unless you show up super early - we got there at 5:50 recently and there was already an hour wait.

Harvest 18 is good but a lot like other hipster bistros I've been to. It's not very near downtown (the Triangle is super-sprawl-y). The Pit BBQ is good but not for a vegetarian.

If you want to splurge a bit, Nana's is a great place that predates foodie Durham but is run by some of the people who inspired it.

The Durham Farmer's Market is very near Motorco and has food trucks galore on Saturdays.

Forest Hills is nice.

Toast is good for a reasonably cheap lunch. Rue Cler is a good French place that isn't big, pretentious or particularly expensive.
