Title: Vegan FOTs
Post by: Racan on June 18, 2016, 11:29:27 AM
Any other vegan FOTs out there? There's that ham vacuum caller, right?

Let's share favourite recipes, war stories, whatever. I'm a civilian member of a police department and I feel like most of my colleagues react with intrigue or revulsion when they discover my diet.

I dusted off my copy of Terry Romero's Viva Vegan recently. Last night I made chorizo seitan and refried bean pupusas for my girlfriend and I. I also made a "Western" Red Lobster-inspired coleslaw loaded with vegan mayo and sour cream. It was pretty tasty.

I try to keep it plant-based, but probably end up being about 98% vegan. At parties and restaurants I don't ask questions about mono and diglycerides and I sometimes just get careless and chow down on a disgusting desert. I don't tell people I'm vegan, but I'd like to be.
My city is great with vegan options, but while traveling I have been served plenty of things I didn't want to.

In Eastern Europe i think vegetarian must mean "not huge chunks of meat" because multiple times I was assured a dish was veg only to find small pieces of meat or discover the unmistakable death-taste of chicken broth.

I sent back a plate of greens with pork chunks in them at a soul food restaurant in Mississippi telling the guy I don't eat meat. He went behind the counter and picked out most of the visible chunks and returned the greens to the table.

In Central America I did some traveling with a group and as the lone vegetarian I would essentially eat rice and beans every meal until one day I discovered a piece of pork gristle in the rice, then I lived on noodles and tomato sauce which luckily was as prevalent as rice and beans for some reason.

I feel like an asshole sending food back and essentially to the trash, but I'd more than likely throw it up anyway if I forced myself to eat it.

The best places I have been food wise are India (they've been doing it for a loooooong time) and funnily enough Warsaw. There's some radical vegan stuff going down there.

I know Terry! She and Isa rule...I was a recipe tester on Veganomicon (great book).  Been vegetarian since 1988 and vegan since 2001.

this is one of my favorite recipes

Ah, the PPK! I like a lot of their stuff. That recipe looks amazing, I'll have to try it out.

Thankfully, I don't have a lot of travel horror stories with veganism. It's a tough balance with sending stuff back. I hate food going to waste, but I also don't want to cause myself any unnecessary discomfort. I've known vegans who would make themselves throw up if they found out they'd accidentally eaten animal products, but that always seemed a bit extreme for me. I was in Dubai for work a couple of years ago and ended up visiting a friend from grad school in Lebanon for about a week. The options in Beirut were incredible. I'd love to travel through India eating my weight in curry.

Hey folks,

Myself and my wife are vegan fots out here in Portland, OR. Long time listener, too wimpy to call in. Someday. Anyway, I am working on making some cultured cashew cheeses out of sprout water (rejuvalac) and some other items. I recommend trying Miyoko's Cheeses, if you can ever get your hands on them. Top-notch stuff, and she's got a cook book, too. It's the closest approximation to cheese you can come to, if you are into that sort of thing. It's neat, because it's actually cultured with bacteria and such.

Anyways, keep fighting the good fight,
Mike

Thanks for the tip, Mike! I've never heard of Miyoko's stuff before. I'll see if I can find some next time I'm in the States. In Canada we have a vegan cheese called Daiya that's readily available at most grocery stores, but, while good in a pinch, their stuff is really not that great.

Miyoko's is great.  A little Daiya is fine, but I'm not the biggest fan. Still better than the vegan cheezes of yesteryear.

my favorite vegan cheeze is from these folks
