Trying to build a playlist of the most *unsettling* songs ever. On account of Halloween and all that. Think Swans, Residents, Xiu Xiu, etc.
Should be *sonically* unsettling, not necessarily just lyrically unsettling.
Care to help out?
If not...heave ho.

These are all deeply unsettling for different reasons...
The Cockfighter by Scott Walker (quite a few scott walker songs off his last four or five albums are very unsettling)
Hamburger Lady by Throbbing Gristle
A Screw (Holy Money) by Swans
It's Gonna Rain, Pt. I by Steve Reich
F**king with the Altimeter by Brainiac
Jesus Shootin' Heroin by Flaming Lips
Metal Machine Music by Lou Reed
These are a good start. Great topic!

"Subhuman" by Throbbing Gristle also fits the bill, but more on an intellectual level.
"The Murder Mystery" by the Velvet Underground screws with you because of two separate voices chanting different lines in separate speakers, and you can't figure the thing out because it seems to be two poetic streams of consciousness speaking.
"DOA" by Bloodrock is a creepy early-'70s song about a guy who survives an airplane crash, or does he?
-
Timothy is song about cannibalism. The band's name was the Buoys and the song was written by the Pina Colata guy.
-
These are all great- I never knew that Brainiac was so disturbing...
Thanks, friends.

If you got Merzbow on there I'd include Whitehouse - Wriggle Like a Fucking Eel (or anything on Bird Seed has that vibe)
Cannibal Holocaust was a terrible movie with a fantastic and unsettling soundtrack.
Smoke Dreams by Ronnie Deauville is so much unsettling but very ghostly sounding.

Hamburger Lady is a rough one.

The Gift > The Murder Mystery

The Gift > The Murder Mystery
Well, yes.

Oh man, the Boiler. I haven't listened to that song since it was pretty new -- and I'm Scharpling's age, so that means I was entirely too young. An amazingly powerful, disturbing song. No joke on the trigger warning -- but it's a serious, important song, and the relation of the vocals to the backing track is powerful stuff.
