Title: Why I still hate the Grateful Dead after watching Long Strange Trip
Post by: Al Hifi on June 21, 2017, 12:36:54 PM
Jerry Garcia seems like a real asshole. He still hung out with Hell's Angels after Altamont. He refused to address fans after attendance at his shows became dangerous. He kicked his wife out after she caught him using.

As for the Dead themselves:

- The film failed to make the case that they were musically valid

- The film almost completely bypassed their albums because they're not worth talking about

- I still don't know why they have two drummers. The kind of music they make just doesn't warrant it.

- The Dead come off as an awful cover band, putting a hippy, noodley spin on songs no one should listen to anymore under any circumstances

- They don't even have the energy to write their own lyrics

- Deadheads are mostly non-creative, non musicians who think any sound that comes from an instrument is phenomenal and unexplainable

So you are better off listening to McDonald and Giles?

I think we got the Grateful Dead experience of a lifetime through the 2013 "Four Day Creep" incident where Mike exposed Tom to the glory of Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, a founding member of the band. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpgjwoMlqZ8 (Vimeo version: https://vimeo.com/187714719)

Another link to MacDonald and Giles (1971), because that album needs some love: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XoV1iNQnUXo

Bonus: satire of Lana del Rey, "Fragile White Sadness" - https://vimeo.com/430081300

I played this all the way through a couple of weeks ago.

I love Giles' drumming style on this record. Apparently he abandoned it soon afterward.

Everything revolving around King Crimson seemed to be in a process of change, and Giles changing drumming fits with never recording another album with MacDonald again.
