Title: S L O W P O D C A S T
Post by: thecramedog on November 07, 2006, 02:23:18 PM
Tom,

why does the podcast upload take so long?  Okay, okay, okay, I'm an impatient twerp I know, but it seems like it should take less 48 hours.  Are you or Mike doing it yourselves and you just don't have the time?  I have seriously considered starting a Best Show fansite that will upload the Best Show each Tuesday night once the show is over.  The site would also contain email-able bits (stuff I thought was strong from that particular show) for quick and easy downloading for the new fan to get a taste.  I'd be happy to remove the music from each Best Show to keep it consistent with your podcast.  I simply think there needs to be a faster uploading process over there in Jersey City.

Keep in mind, it takes a while to get through each podcast, so I'm often not finished with last week's show when the new show begins.  Maddening, let me tell you.

What do you want me to say? It went up late. I left town for 36 hours for a quick getaway and forgot to put the title up. The podcasts need titles and dont get posted without them. I got back on Saturday morning, and the WFMU Record Fair was in full swing, taking everybody on the tech end of things tied up.

I would hope that with the hundreds of hours of Best Show material available to you at any time, you could cool out when a show is late. The day I start getting paid for the show is the day where there'll be a faster uploading process. Until then, this is how it's gonna be.

And un-consider your desire to do a Best Show fansite that immediately uploads the show or replicates the podcast.  I will pull the plug on the show the day someone starts doing something like that - and I'm not joking about that. I sincerely do appreciate your enthusiasm - it is truly flattering -  but try to be patient and realize that this is a labor of love that we spend a lot of time and money on, and there will be the occasional glitch in the system.

Tom.

PS - I just re-read that you dont even finish listening to a podcast when the next one is available?!!? Then what are you complaining about? Get a grip, son!

My schedule is such that I have to be in a 3 hour evening class on Tuesdays during the show. So I listened to the podcasts for a while. I still subscribe to it for archival purposes but don't listen to the podcast anymore.

Nothing's as enthralling as listening to the show live but since I can't do that these days, I prefer the MP3 stream to the podcast- not only is it available right away, but it has all 3 elements that make the show the BEST show on wfmu- the mirth, the MUSIC and the mayhem.

It's too easy to complain but I can only imagine all the preparation and hard work that goes into making the shows such glorious Ws and the extra work to make the podcast available. Thank you Tom!

Personally, my current strategy is this:
When I can't listen to the show live, I download the realplayer and/or mp3 or the show and listen to like the first hour or so at around Wed. or Thurs.  Then I download the podcast when it's ready and fast forward through the first hour so I can listen on my ride to work.  I don't know, I like the music too, especially when the mutants are out and you need  a break from the phone pain.  But the podcast is great cause I can listen while driving, and I play my iPod through my car radio, so it's like I'm actually listening on the radio even though I'm in L.A.

I'm not coming down or complaining--sorry if it came out like that.  And I know you have other stuff going on in your life.  You deserve that if you're doing the Best Show in your spare time.

All good advice above...  I'm just finding that I'm eternally trying to play catch-up in order to FINALLY hear a live show.  To me, for some reason, hearing the shows in order is important.  Again, I know it's rather anal retentive, but it's how I do my Best Show listening.

As for the fansite, you have nothing to fear.  I'm merely trying to help those who are in my situation.  I will not make any kind of fansite.

But you raise a good point, Tom:  how much $$$ do you need to get the uploading going faster?  Seriously, what can I offer you to speed up the process?  Let's play Pay-Me.

first of all: Don't worry about skipping parts of the recent episodes, you won't be missing much ( ;))

second:  you don't get it.

That's definitely not true!

I don't mind the inconsistency of the podcast-upload day.. it's exciting!

The fact people do that makes me madder than a rattlesnake at a thai wedding.

By the way, alpobreath, private-msg me an i'll give you my Paypal account address.

If you send me $400 every week to my Paypal account (that's at my normal $100/hr audio-editing rate that I normally charge my clients--currently, I am charging Tom/WFMU $0/hour to edit the podcast--...this cost covers the time that I have to stay up past midnight to edit the show after coming home from work, and the time lost from coming in late to work from having gone to bed really late the night before)

I will be sure to have the podcast up on your own, personal, private RSS feed every Wednesday morning. Sound cool?

I second what Dan-O/Mel just said, and I also want to thank him so much for the amazing work he does every week. He does all the technical trickery to the podcast each and every week to bring it to everybody. I dont know what I'd do without him, and I feel remiss in not mentioning him by name when I mentioned the 'we' that makes the podcast happen.

Thank you, Mel. You are a Hall of Famer, and the beloved podcast exists due to your hard work, focus and dedication.

Tom.
