Title: Logistics.
Post by: Jason on August 19, 2009, 01:20:36 AM
This thread is for people to offer and request car pooling, travel companions and accommodation for those traveling from afar.
Personally I can offer sofa and floor space to anyone bringing a sleeping bag.
If you're driving in from out of state or some inaccessible Jersey town, please post here if you are willing to help ferry the faithful to the gathering.

I didn't ask my wife, but I am sure she would agree that we are willing to take a boarder on Tuesday night.

In deference to Mike, note that that says "boarder," not "hoarder."

Jason, what cable provider and plan do you have? Weighing my options...

I'm guessing that transporter technology won't be perfected in time to get me from Los Angeles to Jersey City after work on a Tuesday but if anyone is working on one I'd be willing to test it if there's even a small chance it would get me to the FOT meet up.

Since that is unlikely I'll have to raise a glass in your honor, which to be honest I was probably going to do anyway.

If I come, I will be driving and would be happy to give (helicopter) rides to people in need of transportation. I may need a place to stay, depending on hotel availability and cost.

I'm located in Union County, NJ, (Garwood specifically) and would be willing to drive some people for a carpool if anyone is in the area or is in need of a ride.  Send me a PM to discuss.

I'm driving from Metropark and leaving from New Brunswick. If anyone needs a ride to the event from New Brunwick or Metropark, PM me.

If anyone needs a place to crash (max 2 people) message me. Might be able to host. If you are a member of couchsurfing.com, that would be even better.

I'll probably end up getting a hotel room and taking a PATH train over to the station. Can someone in the area tell me which PATH stop is closest to the Iron Monkey?

Exchange Place (Jersey City), first one after WTC. Takes five mins max to walk to either WFMU/Iron Monkey from the station.

Thanks! I tried looking on the PATH website but it wasn't much help without knowing which stop you want.

I love that the guy living in Sweden knows the stop to get off at & we don't.

I think I'm about to book a hotel room. I want a hotel close to the PATH station, and since I'm not made of money, I can't afford a Jersey City room, so I'm looking at Newark. I found a decent hotel that's about a half-mile walk from Penn Station. What's the neighborhood around there like? Is it safe to walk around that part of Newark in the middle of the night?

http://www.hollandmotorlodge.com/ is a cheap hotel not a million miles from the venue and I and a few other FOT will be walking back that way, or you can crash on my couch.

Thanks for the info on that, although that hotel is still a bit more than I'd like to spend. I'm from Ohio so I'm sure I'll spend most of the trip experiencing sticker shock. The hotels around Newark are more in my price range but I don't want to stay there if I'll be unsafe walking from Penn Station to the hotel.

Or I could just drive from the hotel to the Iron Monkey and hope I'll be able to find parking.

I just feel weird about imposing on a stranger. Just a personal quirk, I guess.

I met Cory Booker and he referred to it as an "urban Mecca".

If all goes well traffic-wise, I should be arriving in Jersey City in the early afternoon (I'm trying to time my arrival so I don't hit rush hour), which will mean I'll need to kill several hours before the Gathering. What would the locals recommend as a fun way to kill a few hours in the area? Are there any cool book/record stores nearby?

But he invited you.  And he's only a nonvirtual stranger.

Anyone traveling from/through lower Manhattan?  I'll probably be taking the PATH from the World Trade Center.  It would be nice to show up not completely alone.

That's how you'll die (probably) get used to it, Andrew.

Change of plans.  I think I'll be spending my Tuesday night (and all nights from now on) softly crying myself to sleep.  Thanks, Fredericks!

The way things look right now I'll be leaving work in Bethesda, MD @ 2:00 and driving straight to Jersey City.   I wonder what kind of post-Labor Day traffic I'll be running into.

I would just have a couple of alternates prepared for which exit to get off of the highway near Jersey City.  Options are good to have the closer you get to the Holland Tunnel; I've seen things freeze up pretty good around there.

I'm wholly reliant on the directions I got from Google Maps (which have me getting off 78 at the Jersey City/Columbus Dr exit). If something goes wrong, I'm pretty much hosed, so any alternatives would be welcome.

Howdy all, new to the board and psyched to make the trip. I'll be coming down from New Hampshire and have three empty seats in my car if that can help anyone out; just let me know. And Jason, is that couch spot still available?

Yes, there are two couches.

Is there any chance that this thing is going to "sell out?"  I mean, if I get there at 10pm, could the Iron Monkey turn me away because the place is breaking fire codes or whatever?

Suddenly concerned,
Jon

I get the feeling that "Eat Pizza with Mike" will be crowded, it's a pretty small pizza joint. Don't know about the Iron Monkey roof.
