Tonight was the trial run of Mike's Skype Thing. Join me and fellow FOTs next week on Skype, Tues. 9 pm-12 am EST as we commiserate with one another until the return of The Best Show. Connect with me on Skype (Michael Lisk from Bayonne, NJ--there's a photo of me) and then join us next Tues. night.
-
I'm not trying to impose my will (okay, I am trying to impose my will), but is there any possibility of you doing a Mike Show on the Internet until the return of The Best Show? I (and probably many other people) think that would be incredible.
-
I second Kormodd's suggestion.
An internet Mike Show would be tremendous.
-
I am game.

How does it work? How many people can connect at once? Are they all talking over one another?
I'll probably give it a chance at some point, regardless, but I'm interested to know the details.
-
Connect with me on Skype and then we'll have a group chat. I'm sure it will be a little chaotic at first as we lurch towards making it lively, but I envision it as a virtual Massa's Tavern where people say stupid shit and talk over each other, but occasionally stumble upon something brilliant.
-
Also, as a means of imposing order, I will act as the moderator/teacher/group therapy leader/facilitator/bartender who will occasionally call on group members at random. Please be prepared to contribute (i.e. not too drunk).
-
I don't have a webcam. Is it still possible for me to participate in this?
-
I don't have a web cam. A web cam is not necessary and in some respects would only be a distraction.
-
You guys are livin' in the 80s!
Or at least the mid 2000s.

Tearing into us one by one does sound appealing. I'm in!
-
Goddammit, I'm at work at that time. Any chance we can see it at other times? Mike fans need their fix. Drinking Coors Light alone is no fun...

I am going to try and record it and post over at the Fredericks Mind Thing site.

I used this app for my short-lived podcast; it automatically records everything you do on Skype: http://download.cnet.com/CallNote-Premium/3000-2349_4-76014515.html (http://download.cnet.com/CallNote-Premium/3000-2349_4-76014515.html)

It was okay. Fredericks's voice was echoey and Mike's voice kept cutting in and out.
-
Also, Fredericks should try using an e-cigarette. That cough was brutal.

Technically.

I'll use one tonight at 9 O'Clock.
-
Will this be your first time using one? If so, that should be interesting.

A little tiring at points, but fun. The inclusion of Sarah and Petey were highlights. The person who said "Petey's been on my mind a lot lately" was a bit troubling.
-
Tom will probably have his show by then, but the anniversary of the Jonestown Massacre (November 18th) does fall on a Tuesday this year. Something to keep in mind.
-
Would you like to co-host next week, Kormodd? It's a support group, so everyone is welcome to speak. This way it might not be too "tiring" for you.
-
I would not. I'm a horrible speaker. I briefly did a podcast with Sarah and realized that doing such a thing was not for me. I'll make small contributions next week as I did this week.
It wasn't TOO tiring. I simply said it was A LITTLE tiring at points. Jeezum crow. I like the show and think it will get better as you guys get used to the format.

Busting, busting keeps the balls from rusting.
-
I think more ball busting should be incorporated into the show. Feel free to get on my case.
-

Just to clarify, Petey appeared on this Skype-based program this past Tuesday night?!

Yes. The Skype Thing is full of surprises.
-
Question, what if one were never a caller to the show, but a regular listener, feeling a real gap in her Tuesday night. Can this unknown person join the skype support group? Is this too big a step for a shy person?
-
Yes, that unknown person can join Mike's Skype Thing. That person can also choose not to speak if she doesn't want to, and there's a text chat if she wants to communicate without speaking.

I can not figure out how to join this skype thing. Argh! :(

Skype call "fredericksmindthing."

If anyone's interested in watching Blake's 7, the show that Sarah and I were talking about last night, the entirety of it is on YouTube. Be warned, though: you'll have to put up with terrible sets, costumes, and special effects. I posted a video of Avon's greatest insults (which didn't embed for some reason) in the YouTube thread, but I guess I'll repost it here.

Those du rags are lame. Not buying from that site next time I want to put on a minstrel show.
-
Thoughts on the chat:
- Mike should make sure he mentions the Skype handle of the person who's hosting the chat when he tweets about it.
- Mike vs. Sarah and the torture porn discussion were highlights. I especially liked Mike's story about a person coming up to him at an FOT meet-up and telling him about a disturbing murder. "I just attract those types of people for some reason."
- I wish this thing were on something more stable than Skype.
-
Those du rags are lame. Not buying from that site next time I want to put on a minstrel show.
Right. Du rags = minstrel show. Makes sense. What's the air like up there on your high horse?
-
I'm joking.

It's so hard to tell.

"Unlicensed recording." Unfortunate, but I do understand that the Wally Wackiman™ brand needs to be protected at all costs.
-
Speaking of AP Mike GIFs:
-
Thoughts:
1) Mike should put out a tweet before the Skype Thing telling people to add fredericksmindthing as a contact, soFrederickse can invite people in the chat. If Fredericks's getting inundated with contact requests while hosting the chat makes things cumbersome, I can invite people into the chat if they can't get in. Just send a contact request to "Kormodd." What a pain in the ass, but I guess that's Skype.
2) Turning on "dynamic view" makes it much easier to see who's talking in the voice chat.
3) Tom's talking in the text chat, with Fredericks and Mike responding to his comments in the voice chat, was a lot of fun.
-
I could only add people already in my contacts.
It was funny anyway.
Appreciate your enthusiasm and support for Mike's Skype Thing, Kormodd.
-
And I appreciate you guys doing it. The Skype Thing is pretty fun, overall.

I'm a smoker, and I don't find the way Rustin Cohle smokes to be particularly strange. Holding the cigarette between your thumb and index finger is unorthodox, but it's not verboten among real smokers. I mainly prefer to hold a cigarette between my index finger and middle finger, but I've held one between my thumb and index finger before, and I've seen other people do it too.
And yeah, I'm trying to kick the habit by using e-cigarettes.

Bad guys always hold their cigarettes oddly. Haven't you seen Coffee and Cigarettes.
-
And I'm reading The King in Yellow now. In it, "The King in Yellow" is a play that drives the people who read it crazy and makes them devotees of the King in Yellow, who seems to be some sort of unpleasant divinity who lives on another planet; his followers want to overthrow the U.S. government and appoint an emperor to represent the Yellow King on Earth. So far, human sacrifice isn't demanded, but murder is deemed necessary to eliminate unsuitable pretenders to the emperor-ship (a complicated genealogy is created by one of the characters to determine who this person is). Mike would no doubt find the book to be pure junk, but I'm enjoying it.
Mike: Why waste your time watching a show you don't like? Instead of spending your time watching the last three episodes of True Detective, why not reread Hamlet or something?

I've seen it. I've never really put much thought into how characters in movies smoke cigarettes (I had to rewatch one of the scenes in True Detective to see what Mike was talking about). I guess I need to start paying more attention to what I watch.

Back atcha, kid.
I just listened to an episode where Frank from Weehawken calls in as "Frank from Scotch Plains." It was jarring. He did manage to mention Mike in Manhattan, and Tom hung up on him on disgust, so all was normal at the end of the call.

One of my favorite all-time hang-ups was a Halloween when Frank asked Tom if he gave out big candy bars because he was rich . Tom stumbled a bit, like a great hitter getting frozen by a change-up. Then he recovered and GOMP'ed Frank. Great memory.

is the show on tonite? i downloaded skype and have no fucking clue how to use it.

OK. Finally talked last night and it was as cringe inducing as I expected. Gotta not get tremendously high before joining the chat. But you FOTers have GOT to join the convo, it is really great. No joke, FONPR is a great ringleader and having a weekly Mike dose helps with the TBS withdrawal. Tuesdays at 9 people! Bring a topic for discussion and don't get high before, you gottta be on your toes with this crowd!

Who was that peeing on the podcast, it was cracking me up, so uncomfortable.
-
It's was me. Fredericks asked if I could record myself "taking a wizz." Who was I to question why?
-
Couple questions: What is Aldi? and What is the "Chinatown" blog that Sarah refers to?
-
Got the skinny on Aldi, April 7th I think. But Chinatown still eludes me...

What was the funny hat book you guys wear talking about?

Don't remember that, but then most weeks I usually can only cough out a few quizzically received non sequiturs before slipping into an opiate-induced sleep

PC Mike is really good on this thing. A few questions--who is the Canadian dude? Who is "Oil Can Tim"? And are Sarah and the nice woman who keeps having mishaps in New York City sisters? (I'm not even going to try to talk anymore unless I can refrain from getting incredibly high before...you gotta be sharp with this group)

No Skype Thing tonight. Fredericks is out of town. And if the thing can't be ingested and spit out via Frederick's Mind Thing, there's really no point in existing, right?

Was that a compliment, Mike?
Regardless: lastest Skype chat is up. Here's a description: A disgruntled Tom Scharpling, still sworn to silence, types like a madman to our (mostly) merry band of Skypeteers. Various members of the chat read his texts. However, due to the weight of the responsibility, the burden gets passed around, frequently.
You can find it here: http://fredericksnprcast.podbean.com/e/tom-scharpling-stops-by-and-texts/ (http://fredericksnprcast.podbean.com/e/tom-scharpling-stops-by-and-texts/)

No, it was the highest compliment, sir. Don't be so paranoid (and put down that McLuhan!).

Tom had a thing with Satellite radio back in the day, there is a great story about him and Little Steven in the archives somewhere. Here is a blog post I found from back in the day.
THE FATE OF THE SHOW
SEPTEMBER 4, 2005
Hey everyone.
I wanted to write to let you know a few things about where the future of the radio show is at and about my move to Sirius satellite radio.
I've given it some thought, and I think that I'm going to try and give it another shot as far as smoothing things over with Little Steven. Being on satellite radio has been a goal of mine for years now, and to be so close yet so far away is something that has been taunting and tantalizing me all weekend long. I need to go for it. Perhaps compromise is the best way to approach this situation - after all, most of the great art and achievements throughout history have been arrived upon when a bunch of people put their heads together and came up with a collective decision. Perhaps I can try to do the Toilet Talk the way that Little Steven sees fit.
I'm going to swing by his mansion in a little bit to try and smooth things over. I'm thinking about bringing a gift by - something to 'bury the hatchet' as they say. Does anyone have any suggestions? A cake? A money clip? A gift certificate? Please email me with advice.
Another weird wrinkle is that it looks like Sirius radio owns pretty much every existing element of The Best Show On WFMU, including all performances and callers. So if you have been a regular caller, it looks like until this thing blows over and my lawyers get into it, your audio likenesses are owned by Sirius. I'm not trying to say that you can't use your voice to order food at a drive thru. I'm just saying that you might want to talk to a lawyer before calling into Sean Hannity for the forseeable future.
I will attempt to straighten this out as soon as I can. Please be patient.
Sad but determined -

Thanks for the tips, Shades. The Exterminating Angel is on its way. I'll add the others to the list.
-
TCM had one of its runs of foreign films the other night, so I DVRed a Bunuel (Diary of a Chambermaid), two Truffaut (The 400 Blows, Jules and Jim), and an Antonioni (La Notte).
I've seen Blow Up (eh), but I don't know that I've seen any Bunuel or Truffaut. I really like Kurosawa (I've seen everything but a couple of his earliest films), Bergman and Fellini, so I try out the other great non-American auteurs when I get the chance. I see on the schedule that I missed a couple of Louis Malle's movies, so I'll catch something by him next time around.

I found The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie to be a great place to start, Buffer.

I think I just found the origin of Stan...he calls in 2/19/02 (listening from the beginning)
Your post makes me sound like a character in the Marvel comics universe.

I don't own an iPhone. I did find this tidbit regarding an individual who was discussed in the latest released episode of Mike's Skype Thing.
I talked to John Popper of Blues Traveler a couple days ago about the saga that left him unconscious and in his skivvies in a Mandalay Bay hotel room on the night of March 20.
Above mentioned episode right here: http://fredericksnprcast.podbean.com/e/stop-talking-youre-boring/ (http://fredericksnprcast.podbean.com/e/stop-talking-youre-boring/)
I'd also like to mention that we agreed to shift the time of the show to 8-10 P.M. EST on Tuesday nights. Until the Best Show returns. Hopefully not much longer.

Speaking of The Beetles and recording, they almost recorded Revolver at Stax in Memphis.

No show this week?

No show this week?
I have contacted Mike to discuss this. His responses have been cagey.

Fredericks did you say you were on Instagram?
-
Nah, I offered to to appease Dave. It didn't work.
-
You guys should keep doing it, but on Thursday. It'll be like Talking The Best Show.

Why has nobody brought up Mikes movie? I would really like to know if his scene made it in the film.

I'm working on that episode as I type. Tricky, huh?

Awesome!

No Skype tonite?

Mike was talking about running, and it got me thinking, so I went for a run today. The last time was in 1999 or 2000. It was fun! I didn't crap my pants!
The new New Pornographer's album is a great running LP (the first 20 minutes at least, that's as far as I went).

Up to 11/11/2008 in listening from the beginning, just heard Fredericks' first (or maybe second) call at around 1 hour: 53 minutes. He got heave-ho'd!
-
Fredrick's, what was that jazz song you chopped up in the last episode?

Our Delight From Bill Evans New Jazz Conceptions. It was the result of a failed glue clean up attempt. The record is much cleaner, but the skip remains, So I recorded it.

Ive always liked his quote.
The name of a man is a numbing blow from which he never recovers.

Would love to hear Tom talk about Mike's Skype Thing on the reborn Best Show.
-
Thank you for not bringing up Chuck Berry's farting on a prostitute sex video.
-
Tom talked to us a bunch on the final (unless you guys are meeting up tonite!) Skype Thing, which you can listen to/download on the FMT webpage
-
Oh yeah, Happy Holidays to AP and PC Mikes, Fredericks, Kormodd, Stan, Dougald, and the other Skypers! 2014 sucked royally but we're comin' back strong in '15!
-
What?
-
Happy holidays, Fredericks! Here's hoping for a better 2015 than 2014...that's all I meant
-
Thanks, Epic. Backatcha!
-
really enjoying yr banter w/TS in the 2010 shows I'm up to now in my listening in order. Hilarious stuff
-
More trainspotting: very end of 11/30/2010, Tom proposes that Mike host a movie night at Massa's...during convo with Maggie Serota. He then says he wants to make a doc on Mike!
-
Made it, Ma. Top of the world.

That was a classic call, my friend...thanks for representing the Whole Sick Skype crew so well. Nice too that Tom thanked Fredericks for carrying the torch during the year away
-
Yes. Tom's acknowledgement was touching. However, Mike's silence regarding his own show is rather disturbing. While I am fully aware of his disgust with the whole MadLibs debacle, it seems rather extreme to act as if the entire year long run never happened.
-
Hey Fredericks, Care to do a Mind Thing tonight since there's no episode this week? Mike suggested on Twitter that we do it!
-
I'm game. Sign in; I'll call you around Eight. Nine's too late for me.
-
I didn't miss tonight's Skype thing right? I'm kinda playing catch up right now.
