Corey Harris-worthy quote: "All the original music clubs are starting to die, and you’re seeing more and more clubs more interested in whether you can bring a large crowd and not whether you’re good or not,” Ms. Samborsky said. “So there is a commercialism that’s necessary for developing yourself as a band. Going grass roots is a really hard way to go now.”

It reminds me of when Gavin Rossdale from Bush was tapped to be a talking head regarding the demise of CBGB, and he said, "Where will young bands get their start in New York City now?"  Where indeed, Gavin?  Where indeed?   :P

Laurie:
Hmmm, there are approximately TEN THOUSAND music venues "in and around the New York town," I think these young bands can find a place to play.

Regarding the article, I am opposed to the author's use of "spunky" as an adjective. For obvious reasons.

And here's the commercial, for the record:

But she's so spunky!  I mean, look at her dress!  The way she stands in front of that aluminum siding makes me want to say, "I am woman hear me roar"!  ...I bet she compares herself to Cyndi Lauper all the time

BUT, I question this part: "It seems some people resent getting a catchy song stuck in their heads after repeated, unsolicited airings"
I mean, how far from the truth are we trying to get here?  Whenever I hear that Empire Carpet jingle, I wish I had a loop pedal just so I could hear it over and over again and again!

Really, though, I wouldn't worry about bands.  If they're really good enough and can stick it out for the love of the game, they'll eventually find an audience somewhere.  Hopefully if awesome bands are smart enough, they'll stay away from venues that attract the type of crowds that somehow enjoy bands like Future 86.
