Yeah, I'm with the folks who were drawn in pretty much immediately. There have been shows that took a few episodes to really sink the hooks in, but The Wire wasn't one of them.

I fell for The Wire from the first scene--before the opening credits, I believe--when someone's being quizzed by McNulty about the crap game he's playing and responds, "Because this is America," or the like.

I do not do the exchange justice, but it was beautiful.

McNulty: I got to ask you. If every time Snotboogie would grab the money and run away, why'd you even let him in the game?

Witness: What?

McNulty: If Snotboogie always stole the money, why'd you let him play?

Witness: You got to, this is America, man.

Thanks, Omar!  Reading that brought the feeling of sheer joy that overtook me when I first saw that scene.

Witness: What?

McNulty: If Snotboogie always stole the money, why'd you let him play?

Witness: Polar bear fell on him.
