Zappa or not Zappa Contest
« on: October 11, 2006, 11:31:34 PM »
Hello Tom
I was on hold on the telephone with my mechanic.
I noticed something weird about the hold music.
It was easy listening soft jazz.  Keeny G
Except there was some malfunction and two soft jazz tracks were playing at once.
Which made it less sacharine. Not good, but.. strange time signatures.
Similar enough instrumentation to make it difficult to tease apart the 'songs'.
Anyway I realized that I was now listening to the exact same sound
that one hears on all the later Frank Zappa Albums - the instrumentals-
not the toilet talk singalongs.
Here's the phone number, but I can't vouch that it'll happen again. It's in
Renton, Washington State (basically Seattle) ask to be put on hold.
they close at 7:00pm Pacific Time on weekdays.  425 204 6649

So; the contest is "Zappa or Kenny Geez"? Or something more snappy.
I leave this precious child on your door step; for you to name.
Two soft jazz song(ish)s would be played at once, then a zappa song
would be played.  Then the listener would have to guess which was
the zappa song.

Is more explanation necessary for this dynamic-
yes dynamic- new game to take hold?
Probably, you would need to hear it to appreciate this.
I'd like to tell you to click on a link to hear what I'm talking about.
But for once, this link does not yet exist.

Maybe there's no game.  Just a demonstration to all crestfallen
Zappa fan(atics) who lament his passing and want more new
Zappa that more can be had. There's an endless supply.
Zappa on Tappa. Sheesh.
Try it as though more zappa is something you'd want to hear.
Then you will know.

Zappa rules? You're gonna love that hold line.
Call and demand to be put on hold.
You will be like little girls in that Poltergeist
movie, hearing Zappa music from beyond the
grave, except that it's not really Zappa and it's
not a toy telephone-
IT'S REAL!

That hold music was dissonant. Sounds like the pianist was holding down nem' sustain pedals and getting chromatic. I doubt that Kenny G ever got that non-smooth but the tune wouldn't be from the Zappa catalogue neither. I was only on hold for a minute so I can guess that it could have been any modern jazzbo-group from the past thirty years. Aside from Eric Dolphy, Jazz is pretty terrible (I agree with Tom S. here). Zappa isn't Jazz....he's Rock in Opposition without as much the art-bent. Look into it. Here's a kind of modern day Zappa musician...Bob Drake.

I can't decide if this guy is a genius or if this is utterly the worst thing ever.

Wow. I hve very mixed reactions to that. 1) In his own Eddie Van Halen kinda way the gut is pretty darn talented. 2) He looks like an idiot who should have gotten a normal haircut 15 years ago 3) His name is Michael Angelo. wow. that sucks.

-Shred is dead
Michael Bastio Angelo was in a band called Nitro and he's the Guiness record holder for fastest guitar playing. Although he's ambidextrous and can go real fast like on those neo-classical runs, his playing is really guitarded.
-R.I.O. is Def
I would have linked to a band called the 5uu's that's better, more focused and less A.D.D. prone than Bob Drake (who did vocals for the 5uu's). The 5uu's is drummer/multi-instrumentalist Dave Kerman's old project. He now heads up the US branch of Recommended Records. He chose the name 5uu's because it was a Gang name that was Graffitied all over town and thought it would be good free advertising. There's no Myspace 5uu page.
-Zappa's big in Japan
The greatest manifestation of the Zappa style was by the now defunct group Tipographica. They explored Zappa's musical language without the cultural baggage. Their composer/guitarist Tsuneo Imahori, has gone on to make soundtracks for many Anime TV shows.

Ooh, I love 5UU's. And Almost all of the Cuneiform Records roster, for that matter. Bob Drake is terrific. He was also in Thinking Plague and Science Group, two other great RIO bands. There was also U:Totem, which was a collaboration between 5UU's and Motor Totemist Guild. All great bands.

And Michael Bastio Angelo is the biggest guitar wanker of all time. None of his music has any substance, it's just him showing off his chops. And of course, it's nearly impossible to take him seriously with that terrible hairstyle he sports.  ;)
