His point?  I'd say there are a couple:  (1) a lot of money is spent for people to confirm the obvious; (2) parents should let kids take center stage rather than hogging the limelight themselves (and this is an example of something that should be obvious).  Pretty unexceptionable.  If you're going to hate Keillor, that article shouldn't be the reason.

Political Correctness Overload Alert

I had no argument with his points. They were reasonable. I do take exception to him poking fun at gay couples for their flamboyance in order to make his point.  That is pretty weak, easy, and obnoxious material based on old stereotypes that are hurtful in the wrong hands (and by "wrong hands" I mean some people who are probably in Keillor's fan base and do not live in areas with many openly gay citizens. These people vote. These people make decisions about gay marriage.). 

Maplewood has a large gay population...parents who have left the city to raise their kids. NONE of the gay couples we hang out with are "flamboyant" in any way (that is not to say that flamboyance is a bad thing - which it is not - but simply that Keillor does not know what he's talking about).  They're just parents doing the job of parenting just like anyone else in town.  If I want "humor" like this, I can listen to a Robin Williams or Eddie Murphy bit from the 80's.  I always thought Keillor was known for his dry wit.  I see neither dryness not wit in this writing at all.

By the way, you may recall that I returned my tickets to see A Prairie Home Companion live in New York.  I sent them to Keillor with a note saying that I was pretty annoyed with his Christmas article and therefore did not want to see his show.  I have not heard back from anyone associated with Keillor.  Not that I expected one, but it is worth noting.

Yes, the homophobia was distasteful, but it was way less vile than it could have been.  At least he did not express opposition to gay couples having kids, as many of his peers might have done. 

I have no interest in becoming the official Keillor apologist.  I just didn't think the article to which you linked was worthy of more than a shake of the head or two.

To me, the biggest strike against him is he's had plenty of time to clarify the Christmas piece as satire, and has yet to do so.

If you have to clarify it, the satire doesn't really work.  I think it clearly was, although it wasn't a good piece of writing.

Granted, but enough people were taken aback by it that it calls for some clarification, doesn't it? Unless everyone took it exactly as he intended it to be taken.

I must've heard Tom talk about TV Pix and the differences between the space shooter game and the football game five or six times now, and yet it never fails to crack me up. Playing video games over the phone on TV sounds like the most impractical and complicated combination of technologies ever devised.
