I liked how excited Kurt Vile was to hear PBR on the phone.

Speaking of Hodgman, this week's "Judge John Hodgman" podcast features a Jason from Alabama whose voice is awfully familiar.

Don't assume too much. I mean, there are probably lots of guys from Huntsville, AL, named Jason who are liturgical geeks and want to squeeze all the joy from the holidays for their poor families.

man you are a stand out new caller
just wanted to tell you that. Please keep calling in.

That was great as was Kurt's impression of the Oh Mercy era Bob Dylan.

If I am a fan of Kurt Vile and Husker Du but [insert attempt at diplomatically expressing an entirely personal and subjective non-like of 'Where Is the Street Team'/aging-indie-rock-dude snark here*], how much will I enjoy this episode?

*I am pretty sure the distaste for our respective writing venues is mutual but I don't want to get all self-righteous about it

The interview is at the beginning of the show so if you need to just skip the first hour.
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

In recent years Earles has largely abandoned the WITST/aging-dude snark stuff you cite above.  As far as the interview on this week's show, there is none of it.

Good to know. (And now I feel like a jerk-slash-worrywart.)

Earles was earnest and straighforward, I thought.  And Kurt Vile was cute as a bug.

This is what's known as being late to the party, but I just now caught up with the last 20 minutes of the FourLoko party, on earbuds.  A couple of thoughts:

The Best Show, as we know, is fractal.  The more closely one examines, the more details there are to notice.  For example, during the last chorus of "Silver Bells," attentive listeners will hear Mike singing "Silver bells / This is hell."  You go, Mike!  Someone out here noticed!

It occurs to me that if this experiment is ever repeated, a good drinking game cue would be: a mug shot every time someone says "Turn Mike's microphone off."

Several people noted the background chatter about Tom being "down" and so forth, but during Jim from Portland's call we can hear John Roderick saying "Scharpling is bleeding." (emphasis added.) A woman (Therese?) comments that "he bleeds for this show." Jeez!  The commitment!

I knew how awesome a guitar player Kurt Vile was, but I really appreciate his singing now. The second song had an almost diphonic throat-singing harmonics-control to it. What a talented fellar!

It's nice to hear Kevin's doing well, but how can you write a Husker Du book without Bob Mould? Man. I might read it just to see how much Bob Mould hates the other guys!

Also I realized one reason I loved Husker Du so well when I was younger is that it sounds the same regardless of the quality of your speakers. You don't need any Dr. Dre Beats to enter the Zen Arcade!
I can hear you judging me.

I think Mould's writing his own book (being "co" written by the "Our Band Could be Yr Life" guy), so he's saving his stories for his own.

At first I thought Kurt Vile said his dad drove a "septic train"   Like that he has bluegrass roots. Also liked that he asked Tom a fairly innocent personal question ("Do you have nieces and nephews?") and Tom took the Fifth. A man or mystery. . .

Jumping on the Kurt Vile appreciation train, I had never heard of him and didn't know anything about him so when he started singing, I was so charmed. He was so silly and a little hyper the rest of the time so for him then to sing like an angel was so cool. Then, of course, the clincher: "Thanks for the wine." That was great.

I'm looking forward for this weeks show. Last year's NYE show was so freaking cool, I can't wait to see how the Do It/Don't Stop Me Now Year will end.
Doing it Mentos style.

I wonder why Kurt Vile went out to the fire escape. I guess he must really like fresh air.

Kurt saying "yous ain't got nos edjucation" a million times in the background cracked me up.

Mr. Vile proved that The Best Show and The Banjo belong together.
