Re: Marx Brothers movies- I watched NIGHT AT THE OPERA after hearing for years how great they were and the good parts were very good, but there were also 10 minute interludes where not-Zeppo would sing opera. Or Harpo would play the harp for another 5 minutes. Then there was the Laurel & Hardy movie which was interupted by some dude singing "Honolulu Baby" which felt like  it lasted for about half an hour. Say what you will about the Stooges, but they aimed low and hit their mark.

There is one, and only one, Marx Bros. movie that's free of all that crap: Duck Soup, which is also the only one that was directed by a really reputable director (Leo McCarey).

"John Worstly Slipp"? Really, Pets. He (John Wesley Shipp) is more talented and funnier than that David Spayed and Neutered.

I love the fact that Tom, or, more likely, someone impersonating Tom, signed this ridiculous petition.

Since he's a washed-up porn actor, John Wesley Shipp is probably better suited for a guest spot on Entourage. Maybe you should consider changing the petition.

Listening to the show now:

A good moment, self-validation wise: thinking I qualified as the rare, elusive listener Tom was hoping for who got what he meant about Ben Kharack trying to update Gulcher.

A bad moment: thinking that actually marked me as kind of old and nerdy.

was it a meltzer reference?  even if it is, i still don't get it.  this one stuck out to me for some reason.

Gulcher was the name of Meltzer's second book. It was a collection of pieces about ephemeral low-culture artifacts like bottlecaps, horror movies, rubbers, etc. Tom was suggesting that an updated version might be the place for Ben Kharack's investigative report on Beano.  I don't think even Tom thought it was his greatest wisecrack ever, but--it was arcane, at least.
