It was my understanding that Victory Records had/has a habit of severely screwing bands out of money.

my little brother worked for Victory for quite some time. Merch at shows for Victory bands would be a bit high because Tony sold the merch to the bands for ridiculous prices! My brother stole a box of shirts for Rise Against and gave it to them at one of their shows. He also hooked up Thursday & TBS. Geoff from Thursday called the house once to say hi.

Victory went downhill with Hawthorne Heights and included a copy of their disc in copies of Thursday + TBS. And yeah, Tony was sued by multiple bands from the label.

I was more into pop-punk (Weston, Bouncing Souls, Lookout Records) with some ska-ish kind of stuff like Less Than Jake thrown into the mix and more indie-r stuff like SuperChunk or Archers of Loaf or The Lemonheads. But a ton of my friends were REALLY into hardcore and I got dragged to all kinds of NYHC and Victory Records Showcase types of things. I was a little into that stuff -- in fact, a 7" of Earth Crisis' FIRESTORM is within sight as I type this -- but I always looked at it from an outsiders perspective.

My favorite Victory band, without question, was One Life Crew. Their music was absolutely horrible and their lyrics were mostly about the superiority of the Cleveland hardcore scene.

The funniest thing I ever saw at a hardcore show -- for some reason, in college, I got roped into some stupid show at the Troc. I forget the entire line-up, but 25 Ta Life was on the bill as was Earth Crisis. The lead singer -- Rick Ta Life -- was going on some rant and ended it by saying something like, "Big Ups to My Mom." One of my friends yelled out "BIG UPS TO MRS. TA LIFE!" Rick Ta Life got really pissed and started screaming, "WHO SAID THAT" and "DON'T DISRESPECT!" It was pretty obvious that it was the scrawny, nerdy kids on the side laughing hysterically.

About two years ago, I was with a bunch of my friends and we went through all those old hardcore albums. Gorilla Biscuits and Youth of Today -- They hold up pretty well. But stuff like Madball or Ten Yard Fight or the aforementioned Chains of Strength... dear god.
albums.

Then again, my friends had a looooot of fun at my expense when they saw that I have like 4 Mr. T Experience albums still in my collection.

It was because of the inclusion of MTX's "Mr. Ramones" on Lookout! Freakout, Vol. 2 that I found out about Ted Leo and The Pharmacists.

Going to be late on this, but also going to post for the first time with this lurking account.

I've been a lower rung underling at the Museum of Natural History and I can vouch people there have some sort of status fetish there.  I've had people who have thrown lines at me like, "I'm the second assistant DIRECTOR of <insert name of ten person department here>!"

The sad thing is it isn't even the people who teach or research the science: those people are generally even-keeled and you couldn't even tell if they were the director of their departments until you talk shop with them and get bombarded with scientific knowhow that could fill a textbook they probably wrote.  Most of the egos there come from the bureaucrats who deal in PR.  If the guy was at their hat check room, I remember the map layout there enough to know that you don't want to breathe their air unless you want to get fired.

Hilarious. I am a product of the same shitty hardcore ambiance as this. It would be hilarious to get Tom to open a show with "Fire Storm," non?

Pretty awesome video, Greggulator.  If you ask me, the host actually bombs worse than you.

Best:

-- Paul Scheer's call. Tom's amusement that Piranha 3DD is not only the newest entry of the Piranha franchise, but also the pornographic parody of the Piranha franchise and the spoof of its genre ("Piranha Movie").

-- Spike's refusal to beg and grovel.

-- Darren Ploppleton's disapproval of Obama's lack of respect for our next president.

That Paul Scheer call was perfect.

Also, "It's a real Kobayashi Maru" in reference to lunch decisions. Hilarious.

My law professor gave us a fact pattern yesterday in my final where someone named Ronald Crump was using eminent domain to take land. I had to double check to make sure Spike didn't write the exam.

About my call last night: Watch any footage of Elvis performing Karate on YouTube and you can see, even if you have zero karate experience, that the guy was no 8th-level black belt. He could hardly stand up let alone do a roundhouse kick.

I just finished listening to your call, which was great, and I have the same problem when talking to other parents. No one ever wants to talk about how Leave Home is better than Ramones.
