Pie! No contest. Sure chocolate and frosting are great, but it's not like they will never appear in another medium.

Plus... think of the regional appeal of pie! Everyplace is known for something different. You can go to any given supermarket and pick up some cake off a conveyer belt (hopefully a-la I Love Lucy), but some lady a few miles away is going to be selling some delicious Grape Pie by the side of the road.

I like both, but pie is my favorite. Strawberry rhubarb pie is maybe the best thing in creation.
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

I concluded in the chat that my mom's pie cake is the best. Herring inside, beef carpaccio on top.

Cake wins if it has buttercream frosting. If it's a cream cheese based frosting, pie wins. Sorry, that's just the way it is.

I love red velvet cake, but only if it's sweetened with beet sugar and NO COCOA POWDER (beet sugar is the correct recipe, of course). And I can't stand the cream cheese frosting!! So, yeah, the buttercream frosting isn't "authentic" on a red velvet cake, but who cares?

We may both be powercallers, but we differ on this one.

Cream cheese icing all the way. I also like cakes topped with whipped cream instead of icing.

Pro, obviously. You could put fresh strawberries and whipped cream on a turd and it'd be delicious. (I assume.)

In general: Pie! Fruit pie only, though, and with homemade pastry crust. No custards or creams, thanks.

The joy that pie-done-right* brings me far out weighs the joy that cake-done-right brings me.

*pie done right: apple (or some fruit) pie served hot with vanilla ice cream.

With that being said, I've never met a piece of cake I haven't liked; I just don't love cake the way that I can love pie.
