Come on, Colin, you're kidding, right? I mean, just look at this:
I wouldn't say I didn't like it (I do), but I've always been a little skeptical about the rock-nerd fetish for Pavement and their offshoots, and Neutral Milk Hotel. There are probably other bands like this too that I'm forgetting. It's practically an article of faith that anyone with good taste must love these bands, but their stuff all sounds kind of the same to me. I do, however, love GBV, though it took me a while to distinguish between their stuff and the other 90s-indie/jangly-guitar/lo-fi/arcane lyrics bands.
I like Arcade Fire OK but I think they're ridiculously overrated. Not that crazy about Vampire Weekend, CYHSY, The Decemberists, or Death Cab (sorry, Gib Benson!).
I (legally) downloaded The Clean's 2-disc set on the recommendations of Ira Kaplan and Brian Turner, but can't get that into it. But again, I wouldn't say I don't like it.
I also like the cover versions of his songs, and I want him to succeed, but I can't really listen to most Daniel Johnston recordings. And I only kind of like The Beach Boys and most Power Pop. I also appreciate MF Doom/Madvillain more than I actually like listening to him/them. Not a huge fan of Joanna Newsome, but I don't think that's all that unusual. I don't really see the appeal of the MC5 (though again, I downloaded a whole 2-disc set from eMusic). And I prefer "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" and "You Are Free" to all of Wilco and Cat Power's other, cooler records.
