I like Radiohead, but I could never get into "OK Computer" which everybody seems to think is their masterwork. I like the stuff they did afterwards.

Vampire Weekend
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
AIDS Wolf
(most) Captain Beefheart
The Walkmen
Interpol
The Fiery Furnaces
Girl Talk
Matt and Kim
Later Animal Collective
Bjork's Volta
Besnard Lakes
That Joy Division box (look, I like the band and I understand their place, but I don't want to hear 30 shitty live tapes of "She's Lost Control", okay?)

I could keep going.

Everything Beth said, plus:

The Arcade Fire (does everything have to be overly dramatic?  Calm down, people.)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
!!!
TV on the Radio
Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks
Hot Hot Heat
Hot Chip
Cold War Kids
Silversun Pickups
Dan Deacon
Franz Ferdinand
Devendra Banhart
Joanna Newsome (I've actually had to leave restaurants, cafes and stores where her albums have been playing)
Kings of Leon
Lavender Diamond

Basically, any band that would be asked to appear in a "Fashion Rocks!" issue of Vogue or something like that.  I suppose this goes into the whole "why I dislike hipsters" thing: the answer is because I hate anything having to do with fashion.  How good can your music be if you're so busy artfully ripping up your fishnet stockings or getting full-sleeve tattoos?

Basically, any band where the members look/dress at all fashionably or look cooler than I do.  I hate you all. I don't even care what you sound like!

Me too! I ignore them so easily without even giving them a chance. But I think doing that puts me on the losing end- there are some exceptions in this vague category of bands. The Kills come to mind. I ignored them for a while purely based on their appearance but later on figured out that their music is fun.

Anyway, cool music that I don't like-

Bob Dylan
Pavement
Deerhoof
Ratatat
All post-rock - just turns me off.
Brian Eno after Another Green World
Fiery Furnaces
All the Billy Childish stuff - I like some of what I've heard so far but I'm not completely on-board yet

I really love The Velvets and The Clean though.

Also, Radiohead (our generation's Pink Floyd).

Yes, another of mine (though I like Pink Floyd, and I think I like the post-Syd stuff better).
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

The last couple Of Montreal albums have been garbage.

I'll defend Joanna Newsom live, her voice is much better than on the albums.

I think her style is interesting and okay in small doses but she sounds too much like Lisa Simpson.

Of bands that I saw as opening acts in the past that I couldn't stand: The Fiery Furnaces, Deerhoof, and Black Mountain.

I'm pretty sure I just dislike all the bands with animals in their names. Somebody needs to put a ban on any more bands named Wolf or Deer something  Cat Power and Dr. Dog might be the only animal bands I like that come to mind.

What are your feelings on Ladyhawk? Neil Young & Crazy Horse? The Groundhogs?

I'm itching to defend so many bands in this thread, but Pavement: I can get behind not liking them.

I'd like to add Man Man to my list. Sounds like lame drunk pirates took over a music studio for an hour.

I should add Elvis Costello to mine, although I might be coming around on him. I picked up Armed Forces after reading the 33 1/3 book and it's easily the best thing I've heard by him.

I'll defend Joanna Newsom in any situation. I love love love her.  I don't know anything about Of Montreal besides The Sundaelic Twins, but I really like that record. Are there any others worth checking out, or do they all pretty much sound the same?

Ugh, I saw them a few years ago and it was even worse than the album.

I still enjoy the first couple albums they put out in the late 90s, when they were closer to that Elephant 6 sound.  Those albums sound very different from the current ones, which seem like they're trying too hard for that "epic" sound.  It was actually their live show that put me off the most, trying way too hard to turn it into a spectacle, like a more flamboyant Flaming Lips.

Well, the song 'Requiem For OMM Mk2' is the death of their second era, ushering in a third. Their early stuff was incredibly colourful, happy/twee 60s influenced guitar pop that can be a bit grating in large doses. They went towards a more rampant classicist approach on records like Adhils Arboretum and Satanic Panic In The Attic, the latter of which is my favourite of theirs - incredibly poppy, some excellent melodies but somehow a bit more 'modern' (however many liberal references/homages there are - eg. 'Climb The Ladder' sounds like Todd Rungren).

Some would say they sound the same because of the voice singing them, which is very singular, but their middle records are very good.

-Sleater-Kinney: the Go-Go's if their idea of fun was a Sunday afternoon listening to NPR
-dead prez: robbing pizza delivery guys isn't a revolutionary act, dipshits
-The Knife: so you want to listen to dance music, but you're scared it'll make you also want to have sex or do drugs, and besides you're more interested in scowling than dancing? Have I got the band for you
-Love: the early singles are fine, but Forever Changes is like a slightly-above-average Moody Blues record

I guess it only pertains to a certain set of people, but I've never been as huge a fan of the Lawrence Arms as everyone else seems to be.
