-Love: the early singles are fine, but Forever Changes is like a slightly-above-average Moody Blues record

Ouch!   It hurts because I can see it might be true!

This just makes me want to go give the Moody Blues another chance.

I'm-a have to say R.E.M. I've tried to get into this band, but I was never able to figure out which early-period record was so good that it atoned for everything after 1991. Their trajectory has gone from meh to ugh for me.

I had to Google Jim O'Rourke.

Mr. Grote, I recommend you procure copies of Eureka and Insignificance forthwith, if only for the cover art.
It ain't ego, it's my love for you.

-Sleater-Kinney: the Go-Go's if their idea of fun was a Sunday afternoon listening to NPR
-dead prez: robbing pizza delivery guys isn't a revolutionary act, dipshits

These made me laugh, even though I do really like Sleater-Kinney. Mostly because they're so LOUD.

I can't think of anything offhand beyond the usual picks (Vampire Weekend, Fleet Foxes, CYHSY). So I'll borrow one from a guy I just ran into while walking back to my apartment:

Guy: You look like you're in a really good mood (I wasn't, actually). What are you listening to?
Me: The Minutemen.
Guy: I don't know them. Can I listen to a bit?
(I hand him the iPod earbuds. He listens to 20 seconds of "The Anchor," then hands them back.)
Guy: They're alright - not intense enough for me. I like stuff like Nine Inch Nails.

Seconded! The records are great, but so is this:

Me too! I ignore them so easily without even giving them a chance. But I think doing that puts me on the losing end.

There are definitely bands that fall into that cool-looking category that I do like (Blondie, I guess?)  but really I remain mystified by the seemingly unanimous decision that like-minded music fans have made about this being the height of male/female attractiveness:

I get so distracted by the fact that I want to feed these people carbohydrates that I automatically discount their music.  Also, it leads to idiots like these getting famous:

Actually, this post has nothing to do with music.  I just wanted to share these photos with you all.

I don't know any of those people except Karen O and Terry Richardson.  Which reminds me: hopeful sign that the 00s might finally be over #1 of 1 (if this has legs maybe I'll start another thread):

I was in St. Marks Books the other day, and there was a whole huge pile of Richardson's porn coffee-table tome on the remainder table, heavily discounted.  This might mean that photos that look like the "Beaver Hunt" section of Hustler circa 1983 are no longer considered high art!
Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.

Done!  Thanks for the tip.  Except that one in the lower left corner bugs me a little bit.  Call me a prude, but I really think that bestiality is not OK!!

You should really devote at least 60 seconds to the Minutemen before passing judgment on them.

Crystal Castles. I don't hate them or anything, they're just not very edifying.

This cements it.

Less an example of prudery than an objection to the impossibility of real consent, surely?

That might be true.  I have no real objection to the dude being violated by the Octopus, but I'm taking a bold stand against the rape of cute fluffy bunnies!!!!!
