Coogan sells hit shows to US TV

Comedian Steve Coogan's production company, Baby Cow, has been signed up to make comedy programmes for the US television network NBC.
Under the deal, shows such as Saxondale and The Mighty Boosh could be remade for US audiences.

The production company will also create new programmes for the network.

Baby Cow, which was created by Coogan with his writing partner Henry Normal in 1999, has produced programmes such as The Sketch Show and Nighty Night.

"What I like about Baby Cow is that they're so prolific and that they're creating strong characters," NBC's head of comedy, Shelley McCrory, told trade newspaper Variety.

The first programme to be produced under the deal will be called Ben, about the richest man in the world, it reports.

It is not Baby Cow's first foray into US television, however.

A US version of The Sketch Show was produced by Frasier star Kelsey Grammer for Fox in 2005, but proved unsuccessful.

Julia Davis's macabre sitcom Nighty Night is also being remade for US network Showtime in a separate deal.
