It's a Super Spectacular Day
https://youtu.be/myyc812X1_I?t=44

From utub: "It's a Super Spectacular Day" This was on an old record in an issue of MAD that played a different ending each time you played it! Lyrics: http://barrygoldberg.net/sillysongs/superspectacular.htm#all

Hey Fon, maybe one of the eight endings from this skull-farmed artifact in my head will be a wining number.

======
Lyrics in order and at approximate times so that you don't wear out the needle on your close-and-play stereo like I did in the summer of 1980.

A Super-Spectacular Day!
It's a great big, beautiful, wonderful, incredible, super-spectacular day
And your heart is humming with good times coming
And you got that happy feeling things are going your way
All the bells are ringing and a little bird's singing while he sits on your windowsill
Singing yessiree, I can surely see, it will plainly be, most definitely
A super-spectacular day! Untilllllllll...

1. CHORUS - https://youtu.be/myyc812X1_I?t=69

'bout a quarter to five your relations arrive
And you greet cousin Beth with terrible breath
And a fat brontosi who destroys your hi-fi
And your great uncle Fred who gets drunk in your bed
And your third cousin Dick who is metally sick
And his creepy friend Joe and six more you don't know
And you're sure there and then as you're shafted again...
That it's not such a super-spectacular day!

2. CHORUS - https://youtu.be/myyc812X1_I?t=120

'Round seven at night you go out for a bite
The streets are aglow from a large UFO
A creature comes out with two heads and a snout
It croaks like a frog and throws up on your dog
It thinks you are great and wants you for its mate
You're sealed in a case and go flying in space
And you silently say as the Earth fades away...
That it's not such a super-spectacular day!

3. CHORUS - https://youtu.be/myyc812X1_I?t=170

You walk out the door of a dry cleaning store
And you're grabbed by surprise by three mafia guys
Who mistakenly think that you're Hymie the Fink
They break your right arm and do bodily harm
And you're writhing in pain and you try to explain
That your name is Jerome and you're on your way home
And you let out a sigh as you're left there to die...
That it's not such a super-spectacular day!

4. CHORUS - https://youtu.be/myyc812X1_I?t=218

A quarter past eight you pick up your blind date
And you really go ape for her fabulous shape
Of the girls that you've met she's the classiest yet
And she's pretty and bright and it's love at first sight
And it's really a shame she's not feeling the same
'Cuz she thinks you're a schmuck and she says "lots of luck"
And you sob in despair as she gives you the air...
That it's not such a super-spectacular day!

5. CHORUS - https://youtu.be/myyc812X1_I?t=268

You're called down in class and you feel like an ass
'Cuz you don't have a clue and you know that it's due
To those classes you skipped and your fly is unzipped
And your acne has spread to the back of your head
And some jerk spreads the word that you're some kind of nerd
And you fight in the hall and punch for a wall
And there isn't a doubt as they're flunking you out...
That it's not such a super-spectacular day!

6. CHORUS - https://youtu.be/myyc812X1_I?t=319

You develop a twitch and a horrible itch
And you're covered with spots and you're getting the trots
And you're feet start to swell and it's easy to tell
From this hideous wheeze it's some awful disease
So you call an M.D. and he says "don't ask me"
If it gets any worse you can speak to my nurse
And you manage to say as you wither away...
That it's not such a super-spectacular day!

7. CHORUS - https://youtu.be/myyc812X1_I?t=369

Your sister pours glue in her hair and blames you
And your neighbor says that you're abusing her cat
And you just left the john with the water turned on
And the house gets all wet and your mothers upset
And you'd die if you knew what your dad's gonna do
And your python gets loose and you know it's no use
And you cry there in fear and it's now very clear...
That it's not such a super-spectacular day!

8. CHORUS - https://youtu.be/myyc812X1_I?t=418

You go out for a spin and the sunroof caves in
And the steering wheel shakes so you slam on the brakes
And the gears get all stuck as you sideswipe a truck
And you run out of gas while you're trying to pass
And you're stalled on the tracks and you try to relax
But the train's coming through and it's heading for you
And you have a quick flash as you brace for the crash....
That it's not such a super-spectacular day!

All the Great Operas in 10 Minutes - Kim Thompson
https://youtu.be/5vNReqUGtsc

Just in time for your GEN ED midterm in Music 101 is this bit of test prep. You can thank/blame me later for remembering it.

Around 1996, it played on AZ PBS when programs would run short. I thought it was brilliant then, and I still do. Glad that some utubber posted it, and so do a few other people.

Documentary: The Harder They Come (1972)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDolgtjAPzU

I haven't seen the original film in years (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6dieHrQIC0), but I think it's worth another look. It introduced me to Toots and Maytals, great harmonies and rolling rhythms, and Desmond Dekker and his voice. I learned about it in film class, when we studied archetypes and film. Here, we have the Country Mouse moving to the Big City to make it...Big. My film prof and dear friend is long dead, but the learning and memories live on.

Meantime
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Llcgzs1jNOM

Above is the trailer for Meantime featuring Gary Oldman, Tim Roth, Alfred Molina, Telly Savalas, and the Muppets. I think that this was a made-for-tv movie for the BBC. The full version is on utube somewhere, or you could just rent the thing. I think it's worth a few bucks. Here is the IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082727/

Oh, and here is Mike Leigh talking about Meantime and its historical context: https://youtu.be/7jgQyLpsAhc

Who loves ya, baby?

Note: I find the theme song both moving and haunting: https://youtu.be/wSw7QxFaIJA?t=52

The Death of Ritchie (1977)
https://youtu.be/_psTWVJnrgc

If you're short of cash, then here is a sappy, made-for-tv movie from "across the pond" - The Death of Ritchie 1977 featuring Robbie Benson and his heavy New York via Texas accent. Heh, sometimes the twang appears. The message seems to be one that says, "If your kid is out of control, then kill him." What a fine message to send to the parents of the 70s!

It's worth viewing for free. I watched it with my dad when I was about eight in our wood-panel basement with the the faux bar room decor, Kent clouds, the fake wood-console tv with the numbers worn off the dial, and my beloved box of legos...ah, my legos. Oh, if you're hesitant about investing time in this terrible ABC Movie of the Week, well, I'm telling you - you are in for a real treat: https://youtu.be/_psTWVJnrgc?t=588

Brick says, "Yeah, he smokes, but he don't inhale! Hahahahahahahaha!"

Spoiler alert: https://youtu.be/_psTWVJnrgc?t=4636

Fon, I love your posts and your pod, too - not sure what the advantage is of posting my crap there, but out of respect, I will do so from time to time.

Lord Sutch BBC Documentary
https://youtu.be/Wc_y6p55MBs

So, Marilyn Manson ripped off Alice Cookies who ripped off Lord Sutch who ripped off Lon Chaney (see London After Midnight and Phantom of the Opera).

Fun Fact: Frank Zappa thought Alice Cookies was a better stage name than Alice Chicken Cooper.

My favorite childhood memories were of gluing Glow-in-the-Dark Aurora Monster Models together with my mom. Of course, the Phantom of the Opera model was the best of all: http://wesclark.com/am/phantom_1.jpg. But then again, The Mummy model came in handy later in high school, because I could hide pot in the pot, so I guess it's a toss-pot between Chaney and Karloff.

I, too, recall that the red tube of Testors Cement for Plastic of the '70s held the models together quite well and even gave you a little buzz, while the blue tube did neither. Kids, do not try that at home; you'll end up shit posting on the Post Burning Site of some future message board as I am doing now.

I think that this is the full Phantom of the Opera (1925) movie here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QKpWPut8iM. Note: The stuff in the mummy's pot might come in handy for this piece of history.

I remember them being too easy to put together and the fact that they looked better without the Glow-in-the-Dark parts.

The drawback, of course, was they didn't glow in the dark.

Ha! So true! Usually only the head and one hand would glow in the dark! Cheapskates!
