Antichrist
« on: November 12, 2009, 03:32:06 PM »
Started watching this last night on IFC on Demand and couldn't stay awake after The Prologue which is basically a bad porno/music video. I will revisit mainly because I'm curious whether the Stunt Doubles' genitals are included in the credits.

I saw this movie in the spring, having heard nothing about it or having watched the trailer. I basically needed to mace myself after the film was over, just to distract my mind from any memory of what I had seen. Terrible. I highly don't recommend it.

This never showed up on Comcast's IFC On Demand section where I live.  Maybe they were worried people would see the title and mistake it for a lighthearted family film.

It certainly is boring for such a shocking film.

It didn't show up when it was supposed to on my Cablevision service either, Chris L. And the description for the movie is just a frantic warning. Sort of like those warning signs you see on the doors of adult bookstores. Von Trier really dropped the ball on this one. He should have distributed vomit bags at showings to build up the hype.

I don't know why, but I feel oddly proud that I was the first person to tell Mike about Antichrist. During our call-screening chit-chat session a few months ago, I brought it up, and he hadn't heard about it!

By the way, was that Antichrist: the Video Game thing real or a joke? Just wondering!
Too soon?

Whether or not this film lives up to it's supposed shock value ... it sounds like a pretty miserable experience either way.

I hated the hell out of Breaking the Waves. The one with Björk was okay, 'cuz Björk was in it. The Five Obstructions was fun, mostly because Von Trier cast himself as a stooge rather than a sicko.

I think that's all the Von Trier I've seen ... I'm fine if I don't see any more.

Disgraceful.  Show some respect to film Artists like Mr. von Trier.  Perhaps you should stick to A&E docu-reality-junk!

Before the blood started flowing in Antichrist and things were kind of slow, I thought to myself, "You know what would be cool? What if those two dudes from Old Joy suddenly showed up at the cabin before all the genital mutilation began?" It would have been a whole other movie, but I think I would have enjoyed it much more than both Old Joy and Antichrist.

Therefore, I cannot recommend Antichrist to anyone without a strong interest in human malignacy like myself. Fans of writhing might also enjoy it. There is more writhing in this movie than I have ever seen before.

Oh yeah, the stunt doubles were in the credits.

Agreed! I loved Breaking the Waves, and the original version of The Kingdom is fun from start to stop. Dogville's interesting, too.

I liked Breaking the Waves, Dancer in the Dark, and what I've seen of The Kingdom (I think I only saw the first part or season).

Dogville was interesting until the dopey ending.

I liked EUROPA. Visually, it's so stylized it almost looks like a precursor to Sin City.  That villainous doctor from The Kingdom is also in it.

Do you define the "dopey ending" as the "Young Americans" montage or also stuff before that?  I like the film a lot, but hated the montage, an O. Stone-like hammer to the head.
