Was that in the West Village, gb? I used to see him, too. He was very frail looking. Maybe the most frail looking person I ever saw.

Yes, Mike.  The restaurant, closed now, was on one of the little side streets in W. Village.

(Mike -- we met about a month ago at Louise & Jerry's. Brian introduced us. It was nice talking to you.)

It's amazing to see how much he physically deteriorated over his career. Compare the Living With the Law cover to some of the photos from the mid 2000s, where he went from a strapping, good-looking guy to something like Keith Richards with the physique of the Deerhunter guy in about 15 years. Sad.

On a more positive note, has anybody heard his cover of the Flaming Lips song "Mountain Side"? Ho-lee mo-lee.
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

I was confused about Therese's Franzen story.

Here's the story in question, Paul:

The Moth: PEN World Voices: Jonathan Franzen

And, yes, I think Franzen should be ashamed. Not because he took the story away from the mother. Since he was a participant, he's just as entitled to tell the story. What he should be ashamed about is the fact that he doesn't seem to have learned anything from it. He doesn't acknowledge his bad behavior as a poor winner and then tries to present himself favorably as the gifted writer of a condolence letter that wasn't even his idea. I think he doesn't want to read the letter because it may contain some truth about himself that he's not even mature enough to confront.

And, yes, I do take a special delight in the fact that Joe Puppy's video has been viewed by over twice as many people.

Mike, I was wondering. Why did Therese hardly have any lines on the Best Show dvd segment?

Really liked this discussion. Didn't think I cried much at movies, but Toy Story 3, Up, and Dumbo also had me in tears. Wasn't mentioned last night, but this scene from The Life Aquatic always gets me:
