one of my favorite deep cuts is from early on, maybe 03? the jist of it: tom is doing an unfair recoard review of the new Steve Malkmus album and Jon calls up.  this seems like it is unscripted, and there also feels like there is a little tension in Jon's voice, like maybe he knows steve in passing, and realizes that if he has any chips to cash that he is about to burn them, cuz tom ask the callers name and jon says something like he does not want to say and that he is kinda nervous...  and it builds from there, with Jon ending the call saying something like  "got that new Monster Magnet? turn it up!!

upon further inspection the show is from March 6 2001, at about the 1/2 hour mark....
you're gonna love hell, its a lot like Ohio.

I remember that  ---was that the final unfair record review?  He called one of Malkmus' songs "Veggie Burger in Paradise".
Sword of Almonds, Show Me The Things...

Hahaha awesome. Did you hear Malkmus on WTF? He sounded just like Pudge.

Maron: " What about Slanted and Enchanted? That's one's GREAT"
Malkmus: "I dunno...it's not that good.......we didn't try that hard...."

When I was nineteen I was kid-napped by Turkish pirates.

When Julian from the Strokes calls in and acts basically like any JW character. After Tom says "no" to his request he chimes in, "You know...you know who this is, right?"

Sounds like the time John Mayer called in to Ron and Fez and asked if the screener told them who it was trying to get through.

I believe that's Andy Earles as Julian.

Ah! Would explain the style. I need to listen to more of the early years.

H. Jon Benjamin (Mets fan) vs. Matt Walsh (Yankees fan) in studio.

I'm just now listening to the first year of shows, and this one is pretty funny.

This is not funny, but I believe Jeremy/James calls into the 9/4/2007 show as himself and talks about Bob Saget and Netflix. It's at 43:50 of the podcast.

12-2-2008.
At around the 1:02:00 point Tom starts planning his career as a country musician, complete with Foghorn Leghorn voice, which then segues into him playing and riffing on the Morton Downey Jr. country song.
The "Oh, family" topic calls are also pretty hilarious throughout the show.
